Getting Ready For Spring – Rooftop Gardening in NYC!

Just a small winter check-in while I take a break from my seed catalogs. The near tropical weather here in New York lately has got me thinking of days soon to come when the weather will be warm and sunny, and I’m in a lovely garden. This weather is a good reminder too that now, not when the weather turns nice, is the time to get started on this season’s garden. So this just happens to be the best time of the year to get started picturing the garden you've always wanted; and the picturing is so enjoyable too!
No matter what your space is, from a New York rooftop to a sprawling yard, or more, there’s a theme and a scale that will bring you just what you have in mind; Asian themes that bring tranquility and peace after hectic city days, or full floral displays that bring seasonal color year round, or the double reward of growing plants and landscapes you can eat too. Perhaps bits of all of those themes, it’s your garden.
Whether you’re going to tackle the job yourself, or if this all sounds a bit ambitious for your own do-it-your-self project, January is the perfect time to get some ideas brewing about the garden space you want, because there’s still time to design and build your new garden in time for the start of spring. January is when most seed catalogs are published and nothing gets my brain racing with ideas like a seed catalog does. Again this year, Fedco Seeds was the winner for me, and again this year I’ve managed to invest some money in the future.
I have a rooftop and the remains of some gardening that went on there where I live in the city, and while I have visions of a fabulous garden there again this season, I also see all the work involved too. It seems like a very big job that I could use some experienced help with. When gardening on the rooftops of the city, and tackling this kind of job, it pays to have some experienced professional help.
Todd nappi rooftop gardener newyorkplantings.comIf you need some expert help and you’re near New York, I’ve got just the Garden Guy for you, Todd Nappi of New York Plantings Garden Design and Irrigation. This is the garden guy we’ve all heard of, the guy that is gardening seemingly 24/7 because he loves it. Todd’s love of plants encouraged him to get a degree in Horticulture at Cornell, just because it sounded like fun. Now with nearly 20 years experience, he’s a Master Gardener, Certified Horticulturist and Arborist, and also a master builder that constructs the spaces for the plants he uses in creating beautiful landscapes. Specialists in Asian Garden Design, New York Plantings has done every kind of project in public and private spaces, even treehouses. You can see samples of their work throughout New York City, the New York Tri-state area and Pennsylvania. Todd’s idea of a complete solution is that you can just come out, and sit down in your garden. You can leave the rest to he and his crew at New York Plantings Garden Design.
The pictures tell a story for me; Todd knows gardens.  https://plus.google.com/u/0/117448630160376137103/photos
His ambition is nothing less than, “Making New York Beautiful, One Yard at a Time.”
It seems like Todd does everything in regards to building gardens and yards, but some of his specialties are:
  • Create design plans and drawings
  • Experts at planting gardens and landscapes, lead by a Certified Horticulturalist, Master Gardener and Arborist who plans and plants for color and foliage all year long.
  • Asian Garden Design is our specialty.
  • Drip Irrigation Specialists, we do complete design and installation, as well as lawn sprinkler systems.
  • Expert outdoor custom carpentry such as decks, planter boxes and pergolas.
  • Stone work including retaining walls, stone and paver walkways and driveways.
  • Landscape lighting designed and installed for any project.

Design features such as drip irrigation keep plants happy and save water, and the right landscape can save lots in energy costs.
Maybe this is your year to get a jump on finally having a garden to enjoy. I find one of the most enjoyable tasks in having a garden is getting to decide what grows there, and planning what you’ll grow this year. Good stuff.
Now back to my seed catalogs and planning sheets. Happy Gardening!!
