New York Plantings: Turn that stale terrace into a wonderful oasis.......

New York Plantings: Turn that stale terrace into a wonderful oasis.......:

I love to come into a drab, bare terrace or rooftop and discuss with a potential client how we can make space better. Turn the outdoor space into a terrace garden. A rooftop garden. A garden to me says a lot more than just a place where things grow. In Asian countries, gardens and parks are the same words. As a hardcore garden designer, and avid landscape design enthusiast and now since living in NYC, a "Rooftop Gardener" I have happily paid my dues in the garden both at my own homes on Long Island and in the Poconos.

As a serious mechanic, antique motorcycle restoration nut, race engine builder turned Garden obsessed, reading hundreds of garden books, hanging around the nursery like a barbershop, attending university for horticultural knowledge was just a hobby still.
I had no intention of turning my hobby and garden obsession into a trade. I didn't need to. I had a great job and a beautiful home with plenty of land to garden practice landscape design and real gardening on with a good budget and plenty of time to do it.

Now I run a small but growing NYC Garden company. Who comes to NYC to garden? The first thing people say is: How can you garden in Manhattan? Well, you can and you cant. I'll return to all this in a new blog later.
Back to your terrace or "rooftop garden" Remember its space not just the plants that make it a garden.
How we can add life, greenery year-round, make the place useful and inviting, give a view from inside the home of life even during a dreary winter's day. Other major and minor factors go into designing a terrace or building a rooftop garden. I want to mention that I do both, with help of course. I mean I both design and build rooftop gardens and beautiful terraces.   From black tar roof on up. from the concrete terrace to a really nice place to be. Blogs were once just a way to advertise and achieve backlinks for me but now things have changed. Google wants "Content" I'll give them "Content". Since I truly love gardening and landscape design I consider myself lucky that I can do this every day and be paid for it.

I even ask that people share some of their NYC gardening or rooftop garden experiences. I'm a real landscape man way before rooftop gardens and no I didn't cut grass, ever. Without those roots, sorry, you can't be any kind of professional gardener because growing things in a box on a rooftop garden correctly come from real garden experience and realizing just what makes plants healthy and grow in the first place. The school helps but there's no substitute for a decade of hobbyist and even more than that as a real tradesman.   Becoming a gardener takes work and a lot of time.

You cant skip the work and claim to be a gardener by planting boxwood in a box on a roof and taking a pretty photo for your website. (well maybe in NYC you can). I'll leave it at this and I hope to rouse some friendly dialogue. New York Plantings is a unique company and we have colorful experiences working in Manhattan and surrounding area landscapes and gardens. To make things more interesting we have started a drip irrigation and landscape lighting specialty company a few years ago and even that, as with anything in Manhattan, NY can turn into an adventure of sorts. I had one gentleman send a post saying he was interested in seeing what I had to say. Hopefully, we can find more. If you will let me know by following I promise not to do any advertising but write the real deal. (there will be links though, sorry)
Thanks for your time.

OK, I will begin writing about NYC Rooftop Gardening Services in Manhattan

As someone who designs and builds rooftop gardens, Townhouse landscapes, installs irrigation systems, landscape lighting, and several other related tasks every day, all day in Manhattan and surrounding boroughs I think it is time to begin writing about them.

Rather than run down a list of all the services we provide I would rather describe the anatomy of our landscape projects and our NYC rooftop garden design/build projects and allow these things to come to light. Several reasons motivate my blogging and hopefully, it will become clear if I collect a readership or interested passers-by.

What I intend to do is bring to light some interesting and little known aspects of the Urban Gardener's daily life as well as impart some of the things that I have learned about running a landscape design and construction company based in NYC.

You can see our daily work photos that speak volumes more than a blog can on our google plus page for NY Plantings or of course on the website.

I just want to see if for now, this thing works and I'm not wasting my time.

Thanks for looking and if you have any specific rooftop gardening or even traditional landscape questions please feel free to contact me.
